→ For the Sautéed Mushrooms

10 - 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
11 - 1 tbsp unsalted butter
12 - 1 clove garlic, minced
13 - Salt and pepper, to taste

→ For Assembly

14 - 4 burger buns, toasted
15 - 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
16 - 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
17 - 4 lettuce leaves (optional)
18 - 4 tomato slices (optional)

# How To Make It:

01 - In a large skillet over medium heat, combine butter and olive oil. Add onions, sprinkle with sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until deep golden brown and very soft. Remove from skillet and set aside.
02 - In the same skillet, add butter and mushrooms. Cook over medium-high heat for 5–7 minutes until browned and tender. Add garlic, cook for 1 more minute, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
03 - In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into 4 equal patties, slightly larger than the buns.
04 - Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side for medium doneness. During the last minute, place a cheese slice on each patty and cover to melt.
05 - Lightly toast burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
06 - Spread mayonnaise on the bottom buns if desired. Add lettuce and tomato, then the beef patty. Top with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Finish with the top bun.
07 - Serve immediately with your favorite sides.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The way the sweet onions and earthy mushrooms tangle with melted cheese makes every bite feel like a restaurant experience
  • Once you master the caramelizing process, you will find yourself adding these onions to everything else you cook
02 -
  • Do not rush the onions even if you are hungry because that transformation from sharp to sweet is what makes this burger special
  • Form your patties gently and avoid overworking the meat or they will turn dense and tough instead of juicy and tender
03 -
  • Pat your mushrooms dry with a paper towel before cooking so they brown instead of steam in their own moisture
  • Let your patties rest for a few minutes after cooking so the juices redistribute instead of running out onto your plate
